Personal Analysis & Feminist View

'Dirty Dancing' starring Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze is a romantic theatrical film that deals with the courage and love that both Baby and Johnny find in each other to deal with issues in their life that is stopping each other from being with one another. It also deals with one thing in particular that during the 1960s was illegal: abortion. One discussion for my Woman Studies class is, should abortion be allowed? Before this topic, in my mind, abortion was not allowed. I thought it was just immoral, I could not even think of such thing. Then I questioned myself when it came to what if the woman was raped? How could she not get an abortion then when something so traumatizing happened to her. How could she bare to see the end result when something so horrible just happened to her?
With the class discussion it really helped me understand the whole abortion aspect. Women should have rights to do what they want to their body, abortion or not. If a women chooses to get an abortion for a reason, it should be allowed. If she was raped, that should be allowed enough. If the man will not help her if she does have the baby and she feels that the baby will come into a world with nothing, she chooses to get an abortion, she is allowed to have an abortion. Many people feel that she should not get an abortion and just put the baby up for adoption, but finding a home for your baby is very hard. Who knows, the baby can end up in a foster care home if that adoption home is not good in the long run. Women can choose to do what they want, what is best for their body, what is best for their life, women can choose! It is not just about moral choice or pro-life, it is about choice. Let people have choices in their life, especially women. Women are always being bossed around, being kicked around if they do not do what people tell them what to do. Let women make choices, for they maybe pro-life if no one tells them what to do.

'Dirty Dancing' Secrets

Jennifer Grey, who plays "Baby" or Frances from 'Dirty Dancing' talks about her life after the movie and secrets she reveals about herself.
YouTube is a video site where anyone can upload videos and is open internationally for anyone to watch, comment, or like. A lot of the videos that is on the YouTube site is either paid by the actual company or the people who post it or else the video is uploaded by a third party. In this case, this video of Jennifer Grey was uploaded by ABC News, an interview about her life after Dirty Dancing and how she felt during the filming of the movie.
Jennifer Grey talks about her anxiety while filming the movie, especially with the dancing because she is not a dancer. After the movie she was very insecure about dancing because everyone knew she did the movie and she thought she was not going to be good enough to dance. Grey was scared of people comparing how she dances in real life to how she danced in the movie. As Grey grows older she felt really insecure with her looks and went on to have plastic surgery. Her 11 year old daughter noticed that in the movie and in real life she looked different, and Grey had told her daughter that she never felt pretty enough.
Grey just like her character 'Baby' was very shy, insecure and through Johnny did she grow and mature to have courage and stand up for what she thought was right. With Grey how ever it was after her plastic surgery and after she won the cup for "Dancing with the Stars" did she feel that the courage was inside her all along.
The video really helped me understand Jennifer Grey as a person in reality not just as a celebrity. Through this video I saw emotions in Grey that I would not be able to see through one of her movies. Instead of just reading, a video can really show you the voice of a person to understand how they really feel when they are talking.

Reader's Response: Dirty Dancing

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092890/?ref_=nv_sr_1

"Maybe a predictable story of girl gets man of her dreams but this film is still brilliant!!!!"

This review was written on June 20th, 2001. In the review expage2002 wrote, "This film had everything dance, love and Patrick Swayze! There was so much in it and it dealt with important issues, (that were at the time, 1960's) , such as abortion." Which I thought was brilliant to the review to show that part is not missing from the movie. Even if abortion was only part of the movie and was not brought throughout the whole movie, it is an important issue and something that Hollywood does not portray as often. As Hollywood has made many movies, not many has dealt with abortion in ways of actually going through with the abortion. In "Juno" the main character Juno, does not get an abortion. She puts her baby up for adoption and finds a lovely couple to take care of the baby.
Dirty Dancing takes places in the 1960s where abortion was illegal in the United States at the time. In the movie, Penny gets an abortion illegally but has issues with her body afterwards. When addressing this issue in the movie, the characters do not say the word "abortion" but assume that the audience already knows what Penny is going to get done to get rid of the baby so she can be able to dance for the next season to make money.
The reader knew their history by knowing that at the time in the United States it was illegal and did not miss the abortion aspect from the movie or fail to review that part.

The Time of your Life by: R. Penola

From Amazon this movie had a lot of great reviews. Everyone who gave the movie a great review in a well detailed manner, got four or five stars on that review. In this particular review by Penola, he or she is very amused and impressed by the music and love that is portray. How the innocence and beauty of Jennifer Grey as she portrays Baby is what sparks and makes the love between Baby and Johnny "electrifying." This review like many other reviews I have read on Amazon, is based on the love between Baby and Johnny. Women, like to see the love in stories, love that is electrifying and amazing in every where that probably cannot be achieved in reality. I think this movie does provide that, which is why so many people love this movie, because of the characters and how the actors and actress portrays the characters to show that love, which is very moving. If I were to see many reviews like this on this movie and have never seen this movie before, I would want to watch it. Especially since it has the famous actor: Patrick Swayze in it, who also acted in "Ghost" I would be more likely to. He's the ideal man in the movies that you would want to see being portray in a romance, because of his looks and because of the emotion he can bring to a character.

WOW!!!! Best Movie EVER!!!

By an anonymous reviewer, they were actually skeptical about the movie being a "chick flick" at first and did not want to see it. Although as they watched the movie on they found the story line was addicting and kept on watching till the end and was impressed. A lot of people would see this movie as a chick flick because of the love story and the dancing. First off from the official poster of the movie you can already see Baby and Johnny dancing and close enough with skin touching, which already sybolizes the romance within the movie. With this movie, they also promote the love that the main character shows within the official poster and the dancing. Hence the name "Dirty Dancing." Dancing as many people see it, is something only girls would. Not true obviously. But when girls plus dancing is combined, most people would see it as a chick flick.

From Screen to Stage

From Screen to Stage: Dirty Dancing Live, by Millie Taylor gives an insight to the live stage performance of "Dirty Dancing."
If anyone has ever been to a live show of any sort, you will know that the actors/actress performing have practice long hard hours trying to get the performance right. It's live where audience can see so a mistake is hard to say "cut" to and start over. In Taylor's article she goes as an audience and also talks with production crew about how the show works and what happens during the performance. A lot of what happens in the actual movie, for example: the lifting of Frances in the pond, cannot be literally performed on a stage live. There has to be accommodations for the live stage performance, and the show does this by incorporating the audience. The article particularly focuses on having a connection to your audience, when the show can have a connection with the audience it makes the attention more drawn to the show instead of audience members focusing else where.
The author had mention that a lot of the audience members were 95 percent female and 5 percent male. Those 5 percent "are either manacled to their women or here by mistake"(282). I think a lot of men do not go see this movie or live on stage because it's known as a "chick flick"- a movie or show that is romantic and usually deals with a leading female character. But there is another motive men would see this movie: because of the dancing. "Dirty" dancing thus the title, shows the movement of women's body in particular that is the sex appeal of this movie and show that can be the main motive to why men see this movie or show. A leading female actress gives women the sense of empowerment from the performance and gives a sense of strength that is being influenced to women out there.
With this article it gives you an insight to the connection with the stage members and the audience members. The hard work this is put into putting on a live show and having the stress to make sure your performance goes right. Being able to see the movie and feel the emotions I feel when watching it is great. Although if I see the show live and have a connection with the actors and actresses performing would be more exquisite and interesting.
