Personal Analysis & Feminist View

'Dirty Dancing' starring Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze is a romantic theatrical film that deals with the courage and love that both Baby and Johnny find in each other to deal with issues in their life that is stopping each other from being with one another. It also deals with one thing in particular that during the 1960s was illegal: abortion. One discussion for my Woman Studies class is, should abortion be allowed? Before this topic, in my mind, abortion was not allowed. I thought it was just immoral, I could not even think of such thing. Then I questioned myself when it came to what if the woman was raped? How could she not get an abortion then when something so traumatizing happened to her. How could she bare to see the end result when something so horrible just happened to her?
With the class discussion it really helped me understand the whole abortion aspect. Women should have rights to do what they want to their body, abortion or not. If a women chooses to get an abortion for a reason, it should be allowed. If she was raped, that should be allowed enough. If the man will not help her if she does have the baby and she feels that the baby will come into a world with nothing, she chooses to get an abortion, she is allowed to have an abortion. Many people feel that she should not get an abortion and just put the baby up for adoption, but finding a home for your baby is very hard. Who knows, the baby can end up in a foster care home if that adoption home is not good in the long run. Women can choose to do what they want, what is best for their body, what is best for their life, women can choose! It is not just about moral choice or pro-life, it is about choice. Let people have choices in their life, especially women. Women are always being bossed around, being kicked around if they do not do what people tell them what to do. Let women make choices, for they maybe pro-life if no one tells them what to do.

  1. I do agree with you 100% in the fact that the film is a romantic one dealing with the problems related in Johnny and Baby and the forces keeping them apart as well as the subject about abortion issues more pertinent and more visual if you will in the movie like Robbie attempting to date rape Lisa, The clients such as Vivian and especially her husband actually handing Johnny the money and telling Johnny to in a way to tech her extra dances but we know what that really means. The very clear difference of Socio-Economic class difference between the employees of the hotel and then the dancers and especially the visual difference between Neil and Robbie with their condescending Attitude as opposed to Johnny, Penny, and Billy's attitudes and their attitudes and the difference between the two places (staff Quarters and the Kellerman Hotel/Ballroom) Lastly, the main part was just baby and how she grew up and flowered into the woman she became and the woman that became Frances.

  2. I agree with the points you made about abortion and the different reasons and situations you say when it should be legal. Rape and if the man is not going to be around to help out are two of the situations when I also think that it should be legal and simply the woman's choice. This is kind of what we see with Penny during the movie when her and Robbie have sex and she gets pregnant. She thought that her and him had a connection, but all he wanted was sex really. So then when it comes to the child, Robbie makes it clear he won't be there for the child and wants to make it seem like it never happened. So they get the "Doctor" to do the abortion and I believe Robbie pays half of the cost. In this situation I believe it should have been legal.

    1. Economic class was a major issue when dealing with the sixties. The men were in control and they were always trying to be and stay in control of nearly all situations. In a period when abortions were illegal, it was looked down upon. It was thought to only apply to the lower class of society. It could have happened to anyone though. The college student that was highly liked ended up being a complete loser/failure and the core that created and encouraged the abortion for Penny. His higher class status wouldn't take responsibilities for his baby and Penny's lower class status could barely afford herself. For Penny, and most women during that time period, abortion was the only route in a male dominated world.
