Reader's Response: Dirty Dancing

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092890/?ref_=nv_sr_1

"Maybe a predictable story of girl gets man of her dreams but this film is still brilliant!!!!"

This review was written on June 20th, 2001. In the review expage2002 wrote, "This film had everything dance, love and Patrick Swayze! There was so much in it and it dealt with important issues, (that were at the time, 1960's) , such as abortion." Which I thought was brilliant to the review to show that part is not missing from the movie. Even if abortion was only part of the movie and was not brought throughout the whole movie, it is an important issue and something that Hollywood does not portray as often. As Hollywood has made many movies, not many has dealt with abortion in ways of actually going through with the abortion. In "Juno" the main character Juno, does not get an abortion. She puts her baby up for adoption and finds a lovely couple to take care of the baby.
Dirty Dancing takes places in the 1960s where abortion was illegal in the United States at the time. In the movie, Penny gets an abortion illegally but has issues with her body afterwards. When addressing this issue in the movie, the characters do not say the word "abortion" but assume that the audience already knows what Penny is going to get done to get rid of the baby so she can be able to dance for the next season to make money.
The reader knew their history by knowing that at the time in the United States it was illegal and did not miss the abortion aspect from the movie or fail to review that part.

The Time of your Life by: R. Penola

From Amazon this movie had a lot of great reviews. Everyone who gave the movie a great review in a well detailed manner, got four or five stars on that review. In this particular review by Penola, he or she is very amused and impressed by the music and love that is portray. How the innocence and beauty of Jennifer Grey as she portrays Baby is what sparks and makes the love between Baby and Johnny "electrifying." This review like many other reviews I have read on Amazon, is based on the love between Baby and Johnny. Women, like to see the love in stories, love that is electrifying and amazing in every where that probably cannot be achieved in reality. I think this movie does provide that, which is why so many people love this movie, because of the characters and how the actors and actress portrays the characters to show that love, which is very moving. If I were to see many reviews like this on this movie and have never seen this movie before, I would want to watch it. Especially since it has the famous actor: Patrick Swayze in it, who also acted in "Ghost" I would be more likely to. He's the ideal man in the movies that you would want to see being portray in a romance, because of his looks and because of the emotion he can bring to a character.

WOW!!!! Best Movie EVER!!!

By an anonymous reviewer, they were actually skeptical about the movie being a "chick flick" at first and did not want to see it. Although as they watched the movie on they found the story line was addicting and kept on watching till the end and was impressed. A lot of people would see this movie as a chick flick because of the love story and the dancing. First off from the official poster of the movie you can already see Baby and Johnny dancing and close enough with skin touching, which already sybolizes the romance within the movie. With this movie, they also promote the love that the main character shows within the official poster and the dancing. Hence the name "Dirty Dancing." Dancing as many people see it, is something only girls would. Not true obviously. But when girls plus dancing is combined, most people would see it as a chick flick.

  1. I enjoy how you related Dirty Dancing to the film Juno. However the two films are different in my eyes. Although they are both coming-of-age films. Juno thinks about abortion but realizes it is an unrealistic option for her and decides against getting an abortion. She goes through with having the child and as she does she grows up to have the children and she discovers a lot more about herself, growing up, and relationships. Juno wanted a good life for her baby to be. Penny in Dirty Dancing, didn't want to go through with the pregnancy because of how much trouble she would get in and how many people would judge her. She would lose her dancing job so it would affect her life greatly since that's all she ever wanted to do in life was dance. I think the time has a big factor on when abortion was more accepting. Although many people are unsure and feel bad about having an abortion, it seemed like the better option considering a persons special circumstances in life and where it would take them. Although Juno could have gotten an abortion more easily than Penny, she felt it was not the right option for her and decided against it. Penny knew it was the only option for her.

    1. Yes, exactly. Although my point is, not many Hollywood films put 'abortion' as an option. In Dirty Dancing however, that is actually the first film I see where they made abortion an option for a woman.

  2. I really like how you included that it is not your typical boy meets girl movie because it is not! There are many relatable issues that the movie includes such as abortion, coming-of-age, and issues of class. If the creators had not included those parts I do believe that the movie would have been another one of those teenage love stories. As for the abortion, I read somewhere that this is one of the few movies during that time that included the issue of abortion. I was shocked when I saw that because this is a very important issue that needs to be addressed especially in movies. 25+ years later it is still an issue that only Dirty Dancing seemed to find important enough to discuss.
